OpenTable Regulars: Earn Points & Get Rewarded for Eating Out

OpenTable is an online restaurant reservation service used by over 70,0000 establishments all over the world, allowing diners to search by location, cuisine, price and availability. In addition, each establishment has a rating based on verified diner reviews by people who have actually booked through the platform.

OpenTable also operates a loyalty programme known as OpenTable Regulars.  This allows members to collect Dining Points which can be redeemed towards dining experiences or Amazon gift cards, while making just six qualifying reservations can unlock Gold status and additional benefits.

Standard reservations only earn 100 points, but selected restaurants offer 1,000-point reservations. Find enough of these and the rewards become considerably more interesting – particularly if you eat out regularly or travel frequently for work.

So how does OpenTable Regulars work, what are the points worth and is it worth using?

OpenTable Regulars at a Glance

  • Standard booking: 100 points
  • Bonus booking: 1,000 points
  • 1,000 points worth: £6 towards dining experiences
  • 2,000 points worth: £8 Amazon gift card
  • Gold status: 6 reservations in 12 months
  • Gold validity: 12 months
  • Key Gold benefits: Priority Notify, exclusive tables + 6 months Uber One

What Sort of Restaurants can I book on OpenTable?

Worldwide, there are over 70,000 of cafes, pubs and restaurants on the platform – across all price points.  In the UK, most seem to be independently run but you can also find dining chains such as The Ivy, Piccolino, Bill’s and Pizza Express.

A random midweek in London’s West End found nearly 700 venues available for the same night.  Manchester had over 150 restaurants with availability, all in the city centre:

OpenTable Dining Points

How Many Points do I earn for a booking?

All standard bookings earn 100 points.  However, some restaurants actually offer 1,000 points – as a way of attracting guests and filling tables at slower times.  These higher points offerings are clearly shown when booking:

What Can I Use OpenTable Dining Points for?

Diners can use the points they have accumulated for either:

  • Pre-paid Dining Experiences (eg tasting menus, wine tastings, dinner & show) see here
  • Amazon Gift Cards

For UK members, Dining Points can be redeemed as follows:

  • 1,000 Points: £6 experience credit
  • 2,000 Points: £12 experience credit or £8 Amazon gift card
  • 5,000 Points: £30 experience credit or £20 Amazon gift card
  • 10,000 Points: £60 experience credit or £40 Amazon gift card

Look for 1,000-Point Reservations

The standard earning rate of 100 points per reservation isn’t particularly exciting. You would need 20 qualifying bookings just to earn the minimum 2,000 points required for an £8 Amazon gift card.

However, selected restaurants and reservation times offer 1,000 Dining Points instead.  At the Amazon redemption rate, 1,000 points are effectively worth £4, while redeeming towards a prepaid dining experience increases their value to £6.

This means five 1,000-point reservations would earn 5,000 points, worth either £20 in Amazon gift cards or £30 towards eligible dining experiences.

If you’re flexible about where and when you eat, it’s therefore worth looking for the 1,000-point symbol when searching for a restaurant.

How Do I Get OpenTable Gold Status?

OpenTable Gold status is relatively easy to achieve, requiring just six qualifying reservations within a 12-month period.

Gold Status members are entitled to:

  • Priority Notify — when a fully booked restaurant has a cancellation or a table becomes available, Gold members can receive earlier notification than standard users.
  • Gold Exclusive Tables – access to a pool of hard-to-book/prime-time reservations at participating restaurants
  • Six months of Uber One membership – worth nearly £30 (based on the current price of £4.99 a month)

Make Sure You Book Through OpenTable

One important point to understand is that not every reservation processed by OpenTable earns Dining Points.

Some restaurants use OpenTable’s technology to manage bookings made through their own websites. Even though OpenTable processes the reservation, these bookings do not qualify for rewards.  To earn Dining Points and make progress towards Gold status, start your reservation through the OpenTable website or app.

Be careful your OpenTable points do not expire

Points expire after either 12 months of account inactivity or three years from when the points were originally earned.

Who should use OpenTable Regulars?

Ideal for:

  • You already eat out regularly
  • You travel frequently for work and eat out in the evening
  • You can find 1,000-point reservations
  • You’re likely to make six reservations and reach Gold

Not really for:

  • You rarely eat out
  • The restaurants you use aren’t on OpenTable
  • You’re choosing a restaurant purely to earn points

Our Take

OpenTable Regulars isn’t going to transform your travel rewards strategy, but if you already eat out regularly there is very little reason not to collect the points.

The standard earning rate of 100 points per reservation is fairly modest. At the Amazon redemption rate, that’s effectively worth just 40p per booking.

The scheme becomes considerably more interesting when you find 1,000-point reservations. Each of these is effectively worth £4 in Amazon credit or £6 towards eligible prepaid dining experiences. Five such reservations could therefore generate £20 of Amazon gift cards or £30 of dining credit.

Gold status is also very achievable. Just six qualifying reservations within 12 months unlocks additional benefits including Priority Notify, access to selected exclusive tables and six months of Uber One.

I think the scheme is particularly useful for frequent business travellers. If you’re already eating in restaurants while working away, booking through OpenTable and looking for 1,000-point opportunities can generate a small additional return from spending you would have made anyway.

Just remember to start the reservation through OpenTable rather than the restaurant’s own website, otherwise you will miss out on both points and progress towards Gold.
