How to Avoid Fees When Spending Money Abroad

Using the wrong debit or credit card abroad can be an expensive mistake.

Many UK banks and credit card providers still charge around 3% every time you spend in a foreign currency. Some debit cards also add a fixed fee for each transaction, while withdrawing cash from an overseas ATM can trigger another set of charges.

Individually, these fees might not seem particularly significant. But over a two-week family holiday, paying for meals, drinks, activities and accommodation can quickly add £50 or more to the cost of your trip – without you receiving anything extra for your money.

Fortunately, avoiding most of these charges can be a relatively straightforward process. There are plenty of credit and debit cards that allow you to spend abroad without foreign transaction fees, and a little preparation can also help you avoid expensive exchange rates and unnecessary cash withdrawal charges.

In this guide, we explain the different ways of spending money abroad, the hidden fees to watch out for and how to get the most from your money.  We’ll also share the combination of credit cards and bank accounts we personally use when travelling, including how we balance avoiding fees with earning Avios and cashback.

Best F1 Races to Visit in 2027: A Travel Guide for UK Fans

The 2027 Formula 1 calendar has been announced, with 24 races across 22 countries – including the return of Portugal and Türkiye.  The number of rounds with sprint races has also been increased to 10 races.

For British and Irish F1 fans thinking about attending a race next year, Silverstone is the obvious choice. But should it be?

With the British Grand Prix among the more expensive races on the calendar, relatively cheap flights to much of Europe and several circuits easily accessible from major cities, travelling overseas to watch Formula 1 can sometimes offer a better trip – and potentially better value – than staying at home.

Can You Build Your Own Business Class for Less?

Short-haul Business Class can make flying considerably more enjoyable. Fast-track security, lounge access, extra luggage, priority boarding, more space and complimentary food and drink all improve the journey – but they come at a price.

So we wondered: could we recreate the Business Class experience ourselves for less?

We found a British Airways Club Europe flight from London Gatwick to Malaga for £220 and compared it with Economy fares on seven alternatives: BA itself, easyJet, Ryanair, Vueling, Wizz Air, TUI and Jet2.

We then added the extras required to create our own version of Business Class: checked and cabin luggage, fast-track security, lounge access, priority boarding where available, an extra-legroom seat, a hot meal, some fizz and a gin & tonic.

The results surprised us. Vueling managed to beat BA Business Class by £33 and Wizz Air by £28 – but Ryanair, Jet2 and TUI actually ended up costing more than the real thing.

Is It Cheaper to Book a Hotel Directly or Through Hotels.com?

Hotel chains frequently claim you’ll get their best price by booking directly, while online travel agents push hard on their own member discounts and special offers. Clearly they can’t all be the cheapest.

So we decided to test it.

We picked 16 hotels in London and priced the cheapest advance-purchase room for two people for exactly the same Saturday night. We compared four prices: the hotel’s public rate, its loyalty-member rate, the public hotels.com price and the hotels.com member price.

The results show there is no universal winner between booking direct or through an Online Travel Agent (OTA), but they did reveal some interesting patterns about where you’re most likely to find the better deal.

Hotels.com Rewards Review: Is £100 Back After 10 Nights Worth It?

Hotels.com has an interesting loyalty programme that can be particularly attractive if you stay in a mixture of hotel chains and independent properties.

Stay 10 eligible nights averaging at least £75 per night and you’ll receive £100 in Hotels.comCash towards future stays. Depending on how much you normally spend on hotels, that can effectively mean getting more than 10% of your money back.

But there’s a catch: booking through Hotels.com will usually mean giving up the points, status credits and benefits you’d receive by booking directly with a major hotel chain. So when does Hotels.com Rewards make sense?

Mobile Passport Control (MPC): Skip the US Passport Control Queue

Arriving in the US can sometimes mean spending longer at passport control than waiting at the luggage carousel. Fortunately, there is a free app that many visitors from the UK & Europe can use to hugely reduce their waiting time at immigration.

The free MPC (Mobile Passport Control) App allows visitors to skip the regular passport control queues at most US airports by submitting much of the required immigration and customs information before they reach the US border.

Airport lounge

How to Get Airport Lounge Access for Just £21

Airport lounges are one of the easiest ways to make travelling more enjoyable, offering complimentary food and drinks, comfortable seating and a quieter place to relax or work before your flight. While some travellers gain access through business class tickets, airline status or lounge memberships, everyone else is often faced with paying £30–£50 per person for a single visit.

Fortunately, there’s a little-known workaround.  By combining the free Club Avolta loyalty scheme with DragonPass, it’s currently possible to access many of the UK’s best airport lounges for around £21 per visit which we believe is currently the cheapest way to get UK airport lounge access.
