Vueling Club: Earning and Spending Avios

Vueling plane

Vueling is unusual among European low-cost airlines because it has its own frequent flyer programme – and it uses Avios.

Vueling Club allows passengers to earn Avios when flying, with higher status levels offering benefits including priority boarding, Fast Track security, free seat selection and additional cabin baggage.

But there is another reason Avios collectors should understand Vueling. Even if you rarely fly with the airline, you can use Avios collected with British Airways and other programmes to book Vueling flights – either directly through Vueling or, more interestingly, through Iberia Club.

The two redemption methods work very differently and can offer dramatically different value, especially if you are travelling with luggage.

Our guide looks at how Vueling Club works, how to earn Avios and status, and the different ways you can use Avios to book Vueling flights.

Earning & Spending Avios on Vueling

  • To earn Avios, you need to be at least at the Smart tier level (€200 spend a year or 3 Vueling flights)
  • Earn 3 to 7 Avios per € (excluding taxes & charges), depending on Vueling Tier
  • Can transfer Avios to and from BA or other Avios issuing airlines through Avios.com
  • Avios can be redeemed on Vueling at a flat rate of 0.5p per Avios
  • Vueling flights can also be booked through Iberia Club which also include a free baggage allowance

What is Vueling?

Vueling (pronounced VWEL-ing in English) is a Spanish low-cost-carrier owned by International Airlines Group (IAG), the company that also owns British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and LEVEL).

It currently operates an all Airbus A320 family fleet and carries around 38 million passengers a year.  Last year it operated over 23,000 flights to and from the UK.

Vueling Route Network

Vueling operates an extensive route network, primarily focusing on routes to Spain.  Its main operating base is Barcelona but also has significant operations at Bilbao and Paris Orly.

From our British & Irish readers, Vueling currently serves the following routes – although it should be noted that some of these do not operate a winter timetable.

  • Birmingham: Barcelona
  • Cardiff: Alicante, Malaga
  • Dublin: Barcelona
  • Edinburgh: Barcelona, Bilbao
  • London Gatwick: Asturias, Alicante, Barcelona, Bilbao, Florence, Malaga, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Valencia
  • London Heathrow: Barcelona, Bilbao, Paris Orly, Santiago de Compostela, Seville
  • Manchester: Barcelona

Part 1: Vueling Club

Perhaps unsurprisingly, as it is part of IAG, Vueling uses Avios as the currency of its Loyalty Programme: Vueling Club.  Avios can be earned and redeemed on Vueling flights, and can be transferred to other Avios issuing airlines via Avios.com

Earning Avios in the Vueling Club

The first thing to say is that earning Avios in the Vueling Club is not as easy as it is on other airlines.  As is common in airline loyalty programmes, earning rates are dependent on status – the difference with Vueling Club is that you do not earn any miles flying with the airline until you have moved up from the initial (Basic) tier.

  • Basic: No Avios awarded
  • Smart: 3 Avios per € (excluding taxes & charges)
  • Plus: 5 Avios per €
  • Premium: 7 Avios per €

Vueling Club Status Levels

There are 4 status tiers in Vueling Club and progress up the ladder is by earning Tier Points.  Tier Points are calculated over the 12 month period 1 April to 31 March and are earned at the rate of 1 tier point per € spent (excluding taxes & fees), although Vueling do offer extra tier points when you buy bundled packages such as inclusive luggage or seat selection.

  • Basic (entry level)
    • 500 bonus Avios when you move to Smart
  • Smart (requires 200 tier points or 3 flights)
    • Earn 3 Avios per € on flight bookings
  • Plus (requires 2,000 tier points)
    • Earn 5 Avios per € on flight bookings
    • Priority Check-in
    • Priority Boarding in Group 1
    • Bring your flight forward the day of your trip
    • Dedicated customer service line
  • Premium (requires 4,000 tier points)
    • Earn 7 Avios per € on flight bookings
    • Priority Check-in
    • Fast Track security
    • Board first in Group 0
    • Free standard seat selection
    • 1 cabin bag in the overhead compartment
    • Unlimited flight changes
    • Dedicated customer service line

Tier Points are calculated over the 12 month period 1 April to 31 March.  If you are promoted to the next tier, you remain at that level for the remainder of the current year plus the 12 months after that.

If, over the year, you do not achieve the required number of tier points to remain at your current tier, you will be downgraded one level.

Can I credit an Iberia flight to Vueling?

Yes, you can also credit Iberia flights to Vueling at the rate of 5 Avios per € for Smart and Plus members, and 6 Avios per € for Premium members.  No Vueling tier points are earned on Iberia flights.

However, if you are a BA Club member, you might as well credit any Iberia flights to the BA Club – you will get at least 5 Avios per € on Iberia anyway, and up to 8 Avios per € depending on status).

What if my Vueling flight has a BA flight number?

If you are booked on a flight that is operated by Vueling but has a British Airways flight number (ie BA1234) on your ticket, you will earn Avios and British Airways Tier Points as if it were a BA operated flight.

This is the only way to credit a Vueling-operated flight directly to the British Airways Club.

Part 2: How to use Avios to book Vueling flights

You have three options: a) book directly with Vueling, b) move some Avios to an Iberia account and book from there or c) on the routes where BA and Vueling compete, consider using your Avios on BA instead.

a. Booking via Vueling Club and use Avios in full or part-payment

If you transfer Avios into a Vueling Club account, you can use them to book whatever Vueling flight you want, as long as there is availability.  For routes departing the UK, you will get 0.5p per Avios off the flight, and this can be used to pay for the full flight cost, including taxes – plus additional items such as luggage and seat selection.

However 0.5p per Avios is extremely poor value for your points, you can convert Avios to Nectar and get the same value at Sainsbury’s or Argos – and use the cash saved on your shopping to book a potentially better timed flight.

Here are some examples

  • Edinburgh to Barcelona (cash price £27.78): 5,556 Avios
  • Gatwick to Bilbao (cash price £54.32): 10,864 Avios
  • Heathrow to Paris Orly (cash price £51.93): 10,385 Avios

In all cases, you are getting 0.5p per Avios (400 Avios = £2), although you might get a marginally better rate if you change the booking currency to euros (500 Avios = €3)

b. Book a Vueling reward flight through Iberia Club

Iberia use their normal redemption chart when redeeming for Vueling flights so for UK flights expect to pay 4,500 or 7,500 Avios for off-peak dates and 5,000 or 8,250 Avios on peak dates – plus taxes.  It is pretty straightforward to move your Avios across if you do not have enough in your Iberia Club account.

Here are our same flights booked through Iberia Club
  • Edinburgh to Barcelona (cash price £27.78):  7,500 Avios + £53.55 taxes & charges
  • Gatwick to Bilbao (cash price £54.32): 4,500 Avios + £46.00 taxes & charges
  • Heathrow to Paris Orly (cash price £51.93): 4,500 Avios + £46.65 taxes & charges

At first glance, booking Vueling through Iberia looks terrible because the taxes and charges can be almost as high as Vueling’s cheapest cash fares. But this isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison…

Booking through Iberia Club can be better value

Booking a Vueling flight through Iberia CLub is not necessarily a bad deal – if you book through Iberia you actually get a proper sized 10kg cabin bag AND a 23kg checked bag included in your ticket.  If you book with Vueling, they can charge almost £50 extra one-way for just the cabin bag!

Using the above Heathrow to Paris Orly flight as an example:

Including 10kg carry on case

  • Vueling Cash Price: £101.23 (£51.93 fare + £49.30 bag)
  • Book Through Iberia Club: 4,500 Avios + £46.65
  • This means you are effectively getting 1.2p of value per Avios (£101.23 – £46.65) / 4,500 Avios

Including a 23kg checked bag

  • Vueling Cash Price £128.13 (£51.93 fare + £76.20 bag)
  • Book Through Iberia Club: 4,500 Avios + £46.65
  • This means you are effectively getting 1.8p of value per Avios (£128.13 – £46.65) / 4,500 Avios

If you want to take a large carry on bag and check a 32kg suitcase, you can do both at no extra change when booking with the Iberia Club – this would mean an even better return on your Avios.

Avios redemption availability in Vueling via Iberia Club

Unfortunately, Iberia only appears to offer Avios redemptions that have low cash prices on Vueling so if you are looking to go to Spain in the middle of school holidays, then you are going to struggle to find availability.

However, availability outside peak times appears to be good and as an example, here are the Vueling cash prices on Gatwick to Alicante, with the flights with Avios availability via Iberia Club circled each day:

Iberia availability on Vueling

For the dates and routes we tested, Iberia reward availability appeared heavily concentrated on Vueling flights with relatively low cash fares. We struggled to find Avios availability where the one-way cash price was much above £60–£65.

c. Use Avios to book on BA instead

Of course BA and Vueling both go head-to-head on some routes so you also have the option to use your Avios to fly on BA instead.  BA’s Reward Flight Saver offers Avios redemptions with very low taxes but this does mean that the number of miles required is often higher than with other airlines.

Example: Gatwick to Alicante, off peak dates
  • BA flight (booked through the BA Club): 13,000 Avios + £2.50 taxes & charges
  • Vueling flight (booked through Iberia Club): 7,500 Avios + £50.20 taxes & charges

Here there is not much in it, BA costs less cash but more Avios and you are getting slightly under 1p of benefit per Avios.  We would aim to get above 1p for a redemption but this could work if you are Avios rich.  In the end it probably boils down to which airline has the best flight times for your situation.

To be clear, you cannot book a Vueling reward flight directly through the British Airways Club.

Which option should you choose?

  • Cheap Vueling flight + travelling light → pay cash
  • Want to use Avios directly with Vueling → easy, but poor value at 0.5p each
  • Taking a carry-on case or checking a bag → check Iberia Club
  • BA flies the same route → compare Reward Flight Saver before booking

Our Take

Vueling Club is a slightly unusual loyalty programme. For regular Vueling flyers it is definitely worth joining, but the best way to earn and spend Avios isn’t always obvious.

The biggest weakness is that Basic members don’t earn Avios from Vueling flights. However, reaching Smart only requires three flights or 200 Tier Points, after which you earn 3 Avios per € spent. More regular customers can do considerably better, with Plus earning 5 Avios per € and Premium earning 7 Avios per € alongside benefits including Fast Track, priority boarding, free standard seat selection and a cabin bag.

Premium requires 4,000 Tier Points, so it is only going to make sense for very frequent or high-spending Vueling customers. For those who do qualify, though, the combination of 7 Avios per € and the additional travel benefits makes it a strong low-cost-airline status package.

Spending Avios is more complicated.  Using Avios directly with Vueling is certainly flexible – you can use them towards flights and extras whenever cash availability exists – but at around 0.5p per Avios in our UK examples, we don’t think it represents particularly good value.

Booking a Vueling reward flight through Iberia can be much more interesting. The taxes and charges initially make these redemptions look expensive, particularly when Vueling is selling the same flight cheaply for cash. However, the included luggage completely changes the calculation. In our Heathrow–Paris example, including a 23kg checked bag increased the value of the Iberia redemption to around 1.8p per Avios which is very strong.

The problem is availability. In the routes and dates we researched, Iberia reward seats tended to appear when Vueling’s cash fares were already relatively cheap. This makes it difficult to use Avios to avoid the expensive flights where a redemption would potentially be most valuable.

Our approach would therefore be simple: if you don’t need luggage and Vueling’s cash fare is cheap, pay cash and save your Avios. If you need a cabin or checked bag, check the same Vueling flight through Iberia before booking – the included baggage can make an Avios redemption surprisingly good value.

And if British Airways operates the same route, check Reward Flight Saver as well. There isn’t one universally best way to use Avios for these journeys, so comparing all three options can be well worth a few minutes.

Overall, Vueling Club is worth joining even if you only use the airline occasionally, particularly given that membership is free and three flights are enough to reach Smart. For regular Vueling customers it becomes considerably more rewarding – but when it comes to spending your Avios, we’d usually look at Iberia before redeeming them directly through Vueling.
