GWR Rewards: How to Earn Free Train Tickets & Lounge Access

GWR train

If you regularly travel with Great Western Railway (GWR), its GWR Rewards loyalty programme could earn you free Standard and First Class train tickets, First Class lounge access and discounts on food and drink.

You don’t necessarily need to travel that frequently either. Depending on how much you spend, just three days of qualifying travel can be enough to earn a free Standard Class return ticket anywhere on the GWR network.

There’s also a useful benefit just for joining: new members receive a voucher giving 40% off two GWR Advance single tickets.

So how does GWR Rewards work, how quickly can you earn free tickets and is it worth joining?

What is GWR?

PDF map available here

Great Western Railway is the train operating company behind GWR Rewards, and it operates train services west of London Paddington to places such as Oxford, Hereford, South Wales, Bristol, Exeter and Cornwall, plus many other stations in-between.

How the GWR Rewards scheme works

Members collect points for travel on GWR Services only, points add up over a 12 month period and on reaching 50 and 120 points, various additional benefits are triggered.

Spend most be directly with GWR via gwr.com the GWR app or GWR PAYG.

Points are earned based on a daily spend (directly with GWR):

  • £30.00 – £69.99: 10 points
  • £70 or more: 20 points

A maximum of 20 points can be earned per day via gwr.com or the GWR app.  A maximum of 20 points can be earned per week if you are using GWR PAYG contactless.

Whilst points earling is based on the day the ticket is purchased, points are only awarded once the journey has been completed.

Status Tiers

There are 3 tiers starting at Bronze, and progress up the tiers is determined by the number of points earned over a 12 month period.

Bronze (joining tier)

    • 40% off voucher (off two GWR only advance single tickets)
    • Free Hot Drink
    • 10% off food & drink

Silver (50 points)

    • Free Standard return ticket (two GWR only advance single tickets)
    • One-off First Class lounge access (+1 guest)
    • 15% off food & drink

Gold (120 points)

    • Free First Class return ticket(two GWR only advance single tickets
    • Full First Class lounge access (+1 guest)
    • 20% off food & drink
    • 3 courses for the price of 2 with Pullman Dining

Notes

  • The 40% discount voucher is only valid for 90 days from joining the scheme.  All other benefits are valid for 365 days after qualifying.
  • Advance single tickets must be available on your chosen route in order to book a Reward Ticket
  • First Class lounge access is available at London Paddington, Cardiff, Truro and Penzance stations.  Once you reach Gold, you can use the First Class lounge whenever your are travelling on a GWR service to/from these stations, even if you are on the cheapest standard class ticket.

How Quickly Can You Earn a Free GWR Ticket?

If you spend £30–£69.99 per qualifying day:

  • £30+ spend → 10 points
  • 5 qualifying days → 50 points → Silver
  • Reward → Free Standard Class return
  • Another 7 qualifying days → 120 points
  • Reward → Free First Class return + lounge access

If you spend £70+ per qualifying day:

  • £70+ spend → 20 points
  • 3 qualifying days → 60 points → Silver
  • Reward → Free Standard Class return
  • Another 3 qualifying days → 120 points
  • Reward → Free First Class return + lounge access

Because the reward isn’t directly linked to the value of the journeys used to earn it, there is considerable potential to maximise the value of your free ticket. Using it for a long-distance journey will generally provide much better value than redeeming it for a short, inexpensive trip.

Some questions you may have:

When does the 12 month qualifying period start?

Your membership year starts on the day that you enrol into GWR Rewards and resets each year on the anniversary. However if you reach a new tier during the membership year, that new tier level is maintained for the remainder of that year plus the entire following 12 month period.

All points are reset back to zero at the end of each 12 month qualifying period.

For How Long do I retain my Status level?

You retain your status level until the end of your 12 month qualifying period, when it converts to Bronze and you start again. Free tickets, lounge access and Pullman Dining vouchers earned by Silver and Gold members are valid for 365 days from reaching the tier.

How do GWR Reward tickets work?

Discounted or free reward tickets need to be booked online in advance, either via the GWR website or app. When the relevant benefit is triggered, members are issued with a unique code and PIN to use when booking and these need to be entered in the promo code box when booking.

You can use your reward voucher to book any GWR operated service – clearly there is considerable potential value here, depending on the route and time of day that they are used

To book a reward journey, there must be cash Advance Fares available to buy on your chosen train.

Reward vouchers are valid for 365 days from the date of issue plus travel must be booked and made within this period.

Travel on free tickets do not qualify for Delay Repay compensation.

I have a GWR Season Ticket, how do I earn GWR Rewards points?

Season Ticket holders receive Bronze welcome rewards upon joining but that is it. According to the GWR website: “…journeys made with Season Tickets don’t count towards Silver or Gold tiers”

Our Observations

GWR Rewards is similar to the Club Avanti scheme run by Avanti West Coast although GWR have addressed the major loophole in the Avanti scheme by awarding different levels of points based on the ticket spend, rather than simply the number of journeys.  Whilst GWR Rewards is still a generous scheme, there is less opportunity for outsize reward as there is with Club Avanti.

However we believe that this scheme is still extremely generous.  If your typical daily spend on GWR is between £30-£69.99, 5 days travel will get you a return ticket in standard class anywhere on the GWR network and 7 more days will get you an additional first class return plus lounge access for the following year.

If you usually spend £70 or more in a day when travelling with GWR, 3 separate days travel will get you a return ticket in standard class anywhere on the GWR network.  If you can manage 3 more £70+ tickets in the same period, you can claim an additional first class return and 12 months GWR lounge access.

For some people, it might be better to look for a slightly more expensive ticket over £70 in order to trigger 20 points rather than 10 points.

The 20 point limit per day is slightly annoying as business travellers on tickets costing more than £70 each way will only earn 20 points instead of 40.  However as the restriction is based on the date when the spend takes place, it should be possible to buy the outbound and return tickets on different days and earn 20 points per trip, even if all travel actually happens on the same day.  I have not yet been able to verify this so if you know if this works, please let me know.

Who should use GWR Rewards?

Ideal for:

  • One-off GWR travellers (40% discount)
  • Frequent users of GWR services, spending over £30 on tickets each time
  • Frequent GWR travellers who can take advantage of free first class lounge access at London Paddington, Cardiff, Truro and Penzance stations

Not really for:

  • Those who book their train tickets through 3rd parties or corporate travel agents
  • People who spend under £30 on tickets each time they travel with GWR
  • Those who use GWR services infrequently

Important points to remember

  • Travel must be between “two stations served by GWR, on services operated by GWR” – this means that your entire journey must be on a GWR service – if you are connecting on to another operator, you should buy a separate ticket for that leg or you will not earn any points for the journey.

  • Note that only bookings made directly through GWR’s website or app, or through the GWR PAYG contactless system count so any bookings via a 3rd party website or corporate travel agency will not qualify.

Our Take

If you regularly spend £30 or more when travelling with Great Western Railway, GWR Rewards is an extremely generous UK train loyalty scheme.

The most surprising aspect is how quickly meaningful rewards can be earned. Spending at least £30 on five qualifying days is enough to reach Silver and receive a free Standard Class return, while someone spending £70 or more can reach the same level after just three qualifying days.

Gold is potentially even more valuable. At 120 points, you receive a free First Class return ticket, together with First Class lounge access for the remainder of your membership year and the following 12-month membership period. For regular travellers through Paddington or Cardiff in particular, the lounge benefit could have significant ongoing value.

Unlike Club Avanti, GWR has largely prevented members from earning outsized rewards simply by taking very cheap qualifying journeys because points are linked to spend. Even so, there is still plenty of opportunity to maximise the scheme by using free-ticket rewards for expensive long-distance journeys.

The main drawback is that you must book directly with GWR. If your employer requires you to use a corporate travel agent, or you normally buy tickets from another retailer, your journeys won’t qualify.

Even if you’re not a regular GWR traveller, however, the 40% joining voucher alone makes the scheme worth knowing about. If you have an expensive GWR Advance journey coming up, joining before you book could potentially provide an immediate saving.

For regular GWR passengers spending £30+ per journey, we regard joining as an absolute no-brainer – just remember to book directly with GWR so your spend counts.
