Hidden Avanti Fixed-Price Tickets: Save Up to 45% and Choose Your Train

Note: this offer ends on 30 September 2026

We recently covered Avanti SuperFare, one of the cheapest ways to travel on the West Coast Main Line between London and the likes of Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester & Glasgow.  That is as long as you are prepared to be flexible and don’t mind waiting until the day before travel to find out which train you’ve been allocated.

However, there’s another little-known offer that deserves even more attention.

Hidden away through the Discounts for Teachers and Discounts for Carers websites are fixed-price Avanti tickets available on every Avanti West Coast route. Unlike SuperFare, you choose your train when you book, and our research found savings of up to 45% compared with the cheapest publicly available fares.

We compared these promotional fares with both standard Advance tickets and Avanti SuperFare to find out whether this hidden deal is really worth using.

Hidden Tickets?

Like a similar deal for TransPennine Express users, this promotion is available via the Discounts for Teachers and Discounts for Carers websites.  You need to register in order to take advantage of this offer but don’t worry if you don’t have your teachers or carers identification to hand, no proof is required.

Prices for standard class tickets are extremely strong, £19 between London and Liverpool and £29.50 between London and Glasgow are both exceptionally good deals.

For an additional price, you can go for Standard Premium class which gives wider seats (the seats are 2+1 wide, rather than the 2+2 in standard class) and guaranteed tables.

Example ticket prices are as follows:

London Euston to/fromStandardStandard Premium
Coventry£13.50£32.00
Birmingham New Street£13.50£32.00
Liverpool Lime Street£19.00£50.00
Manchester Piccadilly£26.00£57.50
Preston£27.00£58.50
Carlisle£28.00£65.00
Glasgow Central£29.50£66.00

Note that there are no additional discounts for Railcards

Why are these tickets hidden?

These tickets are marketed as member benefits through various commercial websites including Discounts for Teachers and Discounts for Carers.  Registration is free and the eligibility criteria is fairly loose.

Because they are not displayed prominently on Avanti’s own website, many travellers are unaware they exist.

Are these actually additional discounts or just good prices?

We picked a date 4 weeks into the future to compare the promotional prices with the cheapest regular price that was shown on the normal Avanti booking page.

London Euston to/fromFixed PriceCheapest ticket Saving% saving
Coventry£13.50£10.50£0.000%
Birmingham New Street£13.50£12.50£0.000%
Liverpool Lime Street£19.00£34.50£15.5045%
Manchester Picadilly£26.00£33.50£7.5022%
Preston£27.00£31.00£4.0013%
Carlisle£28.00£36.00£8.0022%
Glasgow Central£29.50£45.00£15.5034%

£19 each way between Liverpool and London is actually 45% lower than the cheapest available fare on that day, while Glasgow <> London is 34% less.

Manchester & Carlisle special fixed price tickets were 22% better than the best available fare.

Interestingly on the London services to/from Coventry & Birmingham, we found tickets cheaper than the advertised promotional offer price, however these prices were also shown when booking via the promotion so you will not pay any more via this method.

Note also that we observed that the cheapest “normal” ticket prices were available on significantly fewer services than the Fixed Price offer tickets in the promotion.

Are these prices as good as Superfare?

The short answer is not always. Superfare is cheaper on some services but is actually more expensive on trains between London and Carlisle/Glasgow.  Manchester and Preston are slightly cheaper with Superfare but personally I would pay the extra £1 to know my departure time at the time of booking.

It is important to note that while Superfare is only available on a limited number of routes, this offer is applicable to all Avanti West Coast services.

London Euston to/fromFixed PriceSuperfareSaving
Coventry£13.50£9.00(£4.50)
Birmingham New Street£13.50£9.00(£4.50)
Liverpool Lime Street£19.00£19.00£0.00
Manchester Piccadilly£26.00£25.00(£1.00)
Preston£27.00£26.00(£1.00)
Carlisle£28.00£29.00£1.00
Glasgow Central£29.50£35.00£5.50

Are there discounts for Children?

The Terms & Conditions state that “There is no additional child discount” but we found lots of child tickets available on London-Liverpool for £9.50 each so I think you can assume that the Ts&Cs are incorrect.

What is the availability like?

Availability is really good, although clearly it will depend on how close to the departure date you book.  We picked a single date exactly 4 weeks in the future to assess how many services on that day on which it was possible to buy these cheap tickets.

On the day we researched on London to/from Birmingham, there was availability at £13.50 or less on 26 trains out of London and 24 trains out of Birmingham.

London <> Manchester had availability on 33 trains Northbound and 37 going Southbound at £26.

Liverpool and Glasgow also had availability on over 10 trains each way on that day at the promotional fixed price

Anything else?

  • A maximum of four tickets can be made per booking
  • When travelling, you need to take your proof of membership which you can access when logged into the relevant Discounts for Teachers or Discounts for Carers website (although in practice, I have never been asked for it when travelling on TransPennine).

Our Take

If you’re happy to let Avanti choose your train, SuperFare can still offer the very lowest prices on some routes. However, the hidden fixed-price promotion removes one of SuperFare’s biggest drawbacks—you know exactly which train you’re travelling on when you book.

Our research found savings of up to 45% compared with the cheapest publicly available fares, with particularly impressive prices between London and Liverpool and London and Glasgow. Unlike SuperFare, these tickets are available across the entire Avanti West Coast network, making them useful for many more journeys.

For solo travellers or couples, we’d generally recommend checking this promotion first before looking at SuperFare. If SuperFare is only £1 or £2 cheaper, many passengers will find it worthwhile paying the small premium to choose their departure time in advance.

Before booking, it’s also worth comparing normal Advance fares, especially if you have a Railcard, as these can occasionally beat the promotional fixed-price fares on quieter services.
