How to Save Money on Travel with Amex Offers

Having previously worked for over 25 years in big-ticket furniture retail, I generally maintain a healthy level of cynicism when it comes to marketing claims about large promotional discounts.  However, I particularly like Amex Offers – Unlike many promotions, these are genuine additional savings that can usually stack with other travel deals and discount codes.

What is Amex Offers?
Amex Offers is a program from American Express.  In exchange for spending at a certain brand or store, you can earn extra rewards either in the form of additional bonus points or, more commonly, cashback in the form of a statement credit.  Amex Offers is available on virtually all UK issued Amex cards to both personal & small business customers.  Offers are updated regularly and only operate for a limited period.

What is a statement credit?

For example, if you activate an offer giving £50 back when spending £200 at Hilton and your hotel bill comes to exactly £200, you will receive a £50 statement credit from American Express, effectively reducing your cost to £150.

What sort of companies are included in Amex Offers?

I have two Amex cards and the offers can come from an eclectic range of companies. In the recent past I have benefited from offers in mainstream stores such as Morrisons and Costa but there are often some very niche brands on there, as well as well as higher end companies like Harrods.

Across my two American Express cards, I usually have about 50 different offers available at any one time, usually including some very strong travel offers. In the last year or so I have used this to save money on travel at companies such as Hilton, Premier Inn, LNER and Holiday Extras.

Travel-Related Amex Offers

Here are the travel related offers that I have available at the moment (4 June). As you can see, there are some decent deals to be had:

  • KLM: Spend £1,500 or more, get £150 statement credit
  • Hilton Hotels: Spend £200 or more, get £50 statement credit
  • Hyatt Hotels: Spend £300 or more, get £75 statement credit
  • Jumeirah Hotels: Spend £400 or more, get £100 statement credit
  • Broadwick Soho Hotel: Spend £300 or more, get £100 statement credit
  • Luxury Escapes: Spend £1,500 or more, get £200 statement credit
  • HX Cruises: 10% back on purchases, up to a maximum credit of £900
  • Ambassador Cruise Line: 10% back on a single purchase, up to a maximum credit of £150
  • Europcar: 20% back every time, up to a maximum credit of £150
  • Freenow (taxi app): Spend £40 or more, earn £5 statement credit, up to 2 times
  • American Express Travel Insurance: Spend £125, get 5,000 Membership Rewards points (I would value these at £50)
  • Intrepid Travel: 10% back on a single purchase, up to a maximum credit of £1,000
  • Gordon Ramsay’s Plane Food (at Heathrow): Spend £50 or more, get £10 statement credit each time

A couple of points

  • Some Amex Offers have a limited number of registrations available and can disappear quickly, so it is worth checking regularly and saving offers that interest you
  • Offers are targeted based on the type of American Express card you hold and your profile as a customer so whilst you might have an offer available, this does not mean a friend or family member will have. Equally, if you have a British Airways Amex, do not expect to see offers for other airlines on that card.
  • It is important to review the Ts&Cs for each offer to be sure you are following the correct process and so you know your spend will qualify. For example, some hotel offers may not apply to all hotels under that brand or only checkout spend may count for the promotion.
  • If your have a supplementary card for your partner, they may also have similar (or even different) offers available. These operate in exactly the same way as the offers on the main card and can give more opportunity for savings. Just make sure you use the correct card each time!

My Thoughts

Overall Amex Offers is a very strong scheme. Of course, not all the promotions will suit everyone but there are usually some very strong offers covering airlines, hotels, car hire and train operators which will enable you to potentially make some decent savings on your travel spend

The key thing is to check the app regularly and remember to activate the offer before you make a purchase. Checking the app once a week could easily save hundreds of pounds a year.  In many cases, Amex Offers can be combined with loyalty programme benefits, cashback opportunities or discount codes to create even bigger savings for you.
