What Can You Spend Avios On Apart From Flights?
For many Avios collectors, the ultimate goal is to use their points for Business Class flights or to book trips when cash fares are particularly expensive.
But not everyone wants to use their Avios for flights. You might have more points than you can realistically spend, not have enough for the reward flight you want, or simply prefer to turn them into something useful today rather than save them for a future trip.
Fortunately, flights are far from the only option. Avios can be used towards hotels, car hire, wine, shopping, Eurotunnel LeShuttle and even a meal at PizzaExpress – or converted into Nectar points to spend at places such as Sainsbury’s and Argos.
But these redemptions don’t all offer the same value.
We researched the main ways of spending Avios without flying, calculated how much value you get for each point and compared prices elsewhere to see whether you are actually getting a good deal.
Our Avios benchmark: 0.5p
Because 400 Avios can be converted into 400 Nectar points worth £2, we regard 0.5p as the minimum value you should normally accept for an Avios.
If another redemption gives you less than 0.5p, you could simply convert the Avios to Nectar instead. For flight redemptions, we generally aim considerably higher – ideally 1p or more per Avios.

Flights
If you have a small amount of Avios, do not dismiss using them for flights. One-way short-haul flights on BA cost from 10,000 Avios + £2.50 and we have all the details of redeeming on BA here. Another option is to transfer your Avios to another airline such as Loganair or Vueling and use them there.
Read about how to use British Airways in part-payment for a booking or to upgrade a flight but generally the value for your points is not particularly attractive unless the cash price is really high or you are only using a relatively small number of Avios.
If you have an existing booking, you can spend your Avios on seat selection or additional luggage where you can expect 0.5-0.6p of value per Avios.

Nectar
Remember that Avios have a pseudo-cash value of 0.5p each. This is the value you can get by converting them into Nectar points and spending them at Sainsbury’s or Argos. There is no real excuse for making any redemption that gets less than 0.5p per Avios in value.
400 Avios = 400 Nectar points. The minimum transfer amount is 400 Avios and transfers must be in multiples of 400 Avios.
Don’t assume the transfer will be instant. We transferred 400 Avios to Nectar while researching this article and it took 11 days for the points to show in the Nectar account. Nectar advises that it can take up to 12 days to transfer from Avios to Nectar.

Hotels
You can redeem your Avios in full for part payment at Avios Hotels. To understand the value, we picked the 5 hotels that were most prominently promoted on the Avios Hotels homepage and calculated that you can get 0.5p worth of value per Avios.
However, it should be noted that Avios Hotels cash prices are not always the most competitive. Checking the prices elsewhere, we were actually able to find lower prices for 3 of the properties using our partner Hotels.com

Avis Car Hire
You can make a car rental booking with Avis and pay in full using Avios. We researched a few options and 0.57p per Avios was the consistent value. Â
If you do not want to pay in full using your Avios, there are a number of options to part pay as well.
The rental pricing on avios.com is consistent with the standard pricing on the normal avis.co.uk website so you are getting a genuine 0.57p per Avios. Although as our article on Avis Preferred demonstrates, a 25% discount off standard pricing is available to members of the President’s Club tier.

The Wine Flyer
You can use Avios at The Wine Flyer shop to purchase wine, beer or spirits. There is a huge selection across a variety of price points and you will get 0.6 per Avios when making a redemption, plus you can use a mixture of Avios and cash too. Â
Unfortunately, you cannot pay 100% in full using Avios and our experience was that around 5% of the purchase price needs to be paid on a card. Delivery is free if you spend £100 in a single order.
Are you getting value for money here? Well individual bottles seem to be priced reasonably competitively, across a random sample of 5 bottles, the price was only 2% higher than Sainsbury’s.

However a big part of The Wine Flyer’s business is selling cases of wine. Here pricing becomes a bit more difficult to evaluate as a lot of the wines are not freely available in UK Supermarkets. You still get 0.6p per Avios but wine experts should decide whether the case price is competitive before spending their points.Â

Avios Shop
The Avios Shop has a wide range of technology, travel items, home appliances plus beauty and wellness products available to purchase with your Avios.
You can use Avios for up to 75% of the purchase price of the item in the store but it seems that a minimum of 25% must be paid in cash.
We looked at 5 different products and found that you could get an average of 0.57p per Avios. However, doing a quick benchmark against the same items on Amazon, prices varied significantly so our tip would be to sense check the cash price of the item elsewhere before you part with any Avios here.

Le Shuttle Vouchers
£5 vouchers for the Le Shuttle channel tunnel car service start at 1,000 Avios and go up from there. These are digital vouchers created instantly so can be used straight away on the Le Shuttle website. All you need to do is redeem the voucher code when purchasing Le Shuttle tickets.
You can only create one voucher per day, although when redeeming them, up to 10 can be used in one transaction. Note that if your trip costs less than the value of the voucher, the remaining balance is not refunded.
Vouchers go up in multiples of £5 up to £50, then in multiples of £10 up to £100 and then in multiples of £25 up to £500. Therefore if you want a £195 voucher, you will have to do two separate orders on different days (£190 and £15).

Pizza Express Vouchers
You can convert multiples of 1,000 Avios into £5 vouchers to spend at Pizza Express. These are digital vouchers created instantly so can be used straight away.
You can create up to 5 vouchers per day, up to the value of £250 but vouchers expire after 6 months from issue.

Charity Donations
You can donate Avios to charities supported by the BA Better World Community Fund. The minimum donation is 550 Avios and after that donations are in increments of 125 Avios. A maximum of 50,000 Avios can be donated per month.Â

Our TakeÂ
Flights remain our preferred way to spend Avios. A good reward flight can deliver more than 1p of value per point and occasionally considerably more, which is difficult to achieve with any of the non-flight options.
However, that doesn’t mean you should hoard Avios indefinitely waiting for the perfect Business Class redemption.
Our research shows that most non-flight options give around 0.5p to 0.6p per Avios. The Wine Flyer is one of the better options at 0.6p per point, while Avis car hire and the Avios Shop can also offer slightly more than the 0.5p Nectar benchmark.
There is an important catch: always compare the underlying cash price. Getting 0.57p per Avios isn’t particularly impressive if the same hotel, product or car hire can be bought significantly cheaper elsewhere.
Nectar therefore remains our benchmark. Converting Avios to Nectar gives a straightforward 0.5p per point, so there is generally little reason to accept less than this elsewhere.
If you only have a relatively small Avios balance, don’t automatically rule out flights either. Short-haul reward flights can be available from 10,000 Avios plus £2.50, while transferring Avios to programmes such as Loganair or Vueling opens up some additional options.
Ultimately, the best redemption is one that saves you money on something you actually want. We would rather get 0.6p per Avios towards something useful today than leave thousands of points sitting unused for years in the hope of eventually achieving a theoretical 1p+ flight redemption.
