How to Earn Flying Blue Miles: Flights, Partners & Other Ways to Earn
Flying Blue miles can be earned in many different ways, including flying with KLM, Air France and partner airlines, transferring American Express Membership Rewards points, staying with hotel partners and hiring cars.
For UK members, flying isn’t necessarily the only way to build a large Flying Blue balance. American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred into Flying Blue, while a wide range of airline, hotel and travel partners provide additional earning opportunities.

Earning Flying Blue Miles by Flying
As both KLM and Air France are both members of SkyTeam, you can earn Flying Blue miles not just on their own flights but also when flying on all other airlines within the alliance and these include Delta and Virgin Atlantic. There are also some additional non-SkyTeam partner airlines which will allow you to earn miles.
If you do earn miles by flying, however, it is important to understand which airline marketed your ticket, as this can completely change how the number of miles you receive is calculated. So for example if your flight Amsterdam – Nairobi is operated by Kenya Airways but the flight number on your booking is either KLxxxx or AFxxxx, your mileage earning will be based on KLM & Air France rules, not those of Kenya Airways.
How many Flying Blue miles do you earn on KLM and Air France flights?
Flying Blue miles are earned based on a combination of the spend in euros and the member’s status in the scheme:
- Explorer (basic member): 4 miles per euro
- Silver: 6 miles per euro
- Gold: 7 miles per euro
- Platinum: 8 miles per euro
- Ultimate: 9 miles per euro
Spend is calculated on the base fare of the ticket plus carrier-imposed surcharges but not on government-imposed taxes and fees
Transactions in other currencies are based on the euro exchange rate at the time the ticket was purchased
How do you earn Flying Blue miles with partner airlines?
SkyTeam members include Aerolíneas Argentinas, Aeromexico, Air Europa, Air Mauritius, China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Garuda Indonesia, Kenya Airways, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines, Saudia, Scandinavian Airlines, TAROM, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic and XiamenAir.
Flying Blue Partner airlines are Aircalin, Air Corsica, Copa Airlines, EL AL, Etihad, GOL, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Transavia, Twin Jet, Westjet and Winair
For these airlines, Flying Blue miles are generally earned by a combination of distance flown and booking class (ie a return Manchester-Copenhagen-Los Angeles in Business Class on SAS will earn a lot more miles than a cheap Heathrow-Oslo flight with the same airline in Economy).
However there are exceptions to the earning rules and not all flights may qualify for mileage earning (especially on the non-Skyteam members). See this section of the Flying Blue website for all the details for each partner.
