TripIt Review: I’ve Used This Travel App for Over 10 Years

I have used TripIt for more than 10 years to organise both my business and leisure travel. It automatically turns flight, hotel, car hire and other booking confirmation emails, and aggregates them together in one place so you can see your travel plans in one place.

Here’s how TripIt works, what it does well and whether it’s worth using.

How it works

Once you have setup a free account and downloaded the app, all you do is forward your travel confirmation emails to one single TripIt email address.  Then it will take the information from these bookings and organise everything into a comprehensive itinerary.

This works for flights, hotels, car hire, gigs, sporting events and even dining reservations.  Everything is visible in the app or on the website.

Features

Different travel plans can be shared with other TripIt users (great for larger family trips or if you are travelling with work colleagues) and you can sync your travel plans with your calendar on your phone.

If you need to manually add or amend any bookings, this can be done on the app or directly on the TripIt website.

Using your destination and timings, TripIt has built-in logic to automatically group your travel into separate trips, so if you have multiple journeys planned, the details of your stag/hen do to Malaga is not buried in the middle of your work trips to London.

One other nice feature is the ability to hold scans of documents such as passports and driving licences so you always have a copy to hand.

The app retains details of your booking such as confirmation ID, hotel address/telephone number and check in/out times.  Integration with Google Maps shows airport terminal maps, plus local services such as bars, restaurants, parking and medical services.

A real example

The video clip below recorded from my phone illustrates how the bookings are presented for one itinerary.  This includes separate emails for:

  • airport parking
  • international flights
  • domestic flights in South Africa
  • three different hotels
  • car hire
  • and a lunch booking at a vineyard

Users can click into each individual booking line for more details to view a confirmation number or see the physical address.

My 10+ year experience

Overall it has been excellent.  Virtually all confirmation emails from any sort of major travel agent, airline, hotel operator, car hire firm or restaurant chain are recognised and typically appear in the app in under a minute.

Unfortunately TripIt does not appear to recognise cancellation emails so you will need to manually delete these elements yourself (which is probably no bad thing)

As TripIt’s software needs to digitally “read” the confirmation email that you send, you might find that a confirmation from a small B&B in the Lake District is not recognised – in this case, you will be informed of this and you can manually add this to your schedule.

The ability to add multiple email addresses to your account is really useful and enables TripIt to accept emails from your work email address as well as your personal one.  I set-up an auto forward on my corporate email account to automatically forward on all emails from the corporate travel agent which enabled all my business travel to be added automatically.

At one stage of my career, I was travelling internationally around 3 times a month.  The company policy was to organise your own travel which for me generally involved an indirect flight and usually an overnight stay – TripIt was invaluable for keeping track of all that – in addition to my personal travel!

TripIt Pro

The basic app is 100% free which I have found works perfectly well but there is a Pro version which adds some significant additional features.

The main benefit is receiving real time travel alerts such as gate announcements, changes to departure/arrival time and baggage claim information).

The Pro version costs $49 per year but discounts are sometimes available.  Alternatively, if you organisation uses SAP Concur, “you may receive complimentary benefits that most travelers have to pay for“ so ask your employer.

Our Take

Whilst this will not change your life, TripIt is an app that will certainly make life a lot easier – especially if you are a regular traveller or book complex itineraries.  TripIt is one of our recommended travel apps to have on your phone, you can download it from whatever app store you use and sign up for free here.
