Northern Explorer: Unlimited Rail Travel Across the North of England from £35

Northern is the state owned train operator running extensive rail services across the North of England. They have just launched a new day ticket that I thought I would share as I thought it could be useful for some people.

The Northern Explorer ticket allows you to travel on any Northern train, at any time; weekdays, weekends, peak & off-peak – for a fixed daily price of £35.

Furthermore, if more than one of you are travelling together and/or you want a ticket to cover consecutive days, the ticket price is even more competitive. For example 4 people travelling together on a 4 day pass will pay the equivalent of £24.38 a day.

If your employer spends thousands of pounds each year on flights, hotels, rail travel and expenses for your business trips, there is a good chance you are missing out on valuable rewards and savings.

Most companies are perfectly happy for their employees to collect airline miles, hotel points and loyalty rewards from business travel, yet many travellers fail to take full advantage of these opportunities. Add airport reward schemes, credit card benefits and travel promotions, and the value can quickly add up.  Sometimes it is just as important to claim back everything you have spent and make sure you are claiming the tax relief on your business mileage.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to maximise the personal benefits from work travel without costing your employer an extra penny.

Here are the Airport Lounges You Can Access With Priority Pass, LoungeKey and Dragonpass

We have written a comprehensive article on the differences between airport lounges available on the three main membership schemes of Priority Pass,  LoungeKey and Dragonpass which hopefully people have found useful.  If you have not already read it, you can find it here.

I thought it would be helpful to also share the data behind the research.  This was all taken on 4 June 2026 and shows the lounge, dining and spa facilities that are available to at each UK airport to travellers with a lounge membership.  Of course, all three schemes have a comprehensive selection of lounges outside the UK.

Which Lounge Membership is Best in the UK?

Lounge memberships are an attractive proposition for many business and leisure travellers. Rather than pay a £40 fee for entry, membership entitles travellers to significantly discounted or free entry to the many business lounges. Memberships are available for an annual fee or are sometimes provided with premium bank accounts or credit cards.

There are 3 main airport lounge membership schemes in the UK: Priority Pass, LoungeKey and Dragonpass. Whilst there is considerable overlap of UK airport lounges across the different brands, there are also some key differences. In this article we aim to help you choose the best membership for your needs

How to Save Money on Travel with Amex Offers

Having previously worked for over 25 years in big-ticket furniture retail, I generally maintain a healthy level of cynicism when it comes to marketing claims about large promotional discounts.  However, I particularly like Amex Offers – Unlike many promotions, these are genuine additional savings that can usually stack with other travel deals and discount codes.

UK Railcards Explained: Which One Is Right for You?

If you spend more than £100 a year on rail travel (or in some cases, less), owning a railcard can offer some potentially significant savings. Most railcards cost £35 and offer 1/3 off rail travel. That means you’ll typically break even after spending around £105 annually. There are currently a multitude of different railcards available in Britain, offering ⅓ off most adult travel, with some offering higher discounts for children. Navigating through the criteria for each railcard can be confusing so we have produced a handy infographic.

Is It Really Cheaper to Fly to London via Europe Than Take the Train?

We have all seen those news articles where someone (typically an influencer or TikTok user) has claimed how they have saved a fortune on their domestic travel itinerary by booking two separate hacker flights via a European city rather than taking a direct train. We tested the theory by comparing 59 days of fares between Newcastle and London.

Uber Avios Changes: Winners and Losers Explained

At MaxYourTrip, we haven’t yet covered Avios earning on Uber but as changes to how points are awarded have just been announced, we thought it would be a good opportunity to do a short report.  The changes are good news for travellers using airport transfers and those who pre-book their journeys but less favourable for most other users.
