UK GHIC Card Explained: What It Covers and How to Apply

If you’re travelling to Europe, a GHIC card could save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds in medical costs. However, many travellers misunderstand what it covers and assume it replaces travel insurance – it doesn’t.

The UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) is free to apply for and lasts for 5 years. It entitles you to healthcare in the European Economic Area (EEA), and some other countries, on the same basis as residents of that country. The treatment may require a payment or even be free, but you are treated on the same basis as a local.

92 different ways to earn Avios

Avios is a common loyalty currency used by the frequent flyer programmes of British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling, Qatar Airways, Finnair and Loganair. Avios points can be spent on a range of things including hotels and car rentals but for many people, the most attractive use is for booking reward flights and flight upgrades.
As well as earning Avios by flying, each airline works with different partners around the world which means that there are many different ways of adding to your Avios balance. To optimise earning, serious collectors often join multiple airline programmes that issue Avios.

How we used Avios to score Business Class Flights to the World Cup

My cousin and I love watching sport and over the years we have been lucky enough to visit many big events across the world together, including the Olympics, Euros and Ryder Cup. However neither of us had ever been to the big one – the FIFA World Cup – and as we both have a milestone birthday coming up this year, we decided to try and change that and attend the 2026 event.

TripIt – the app you need on your smartphone

If there is one travel app you should have on your phone it is definitely TripIt. This app takes all your bookings and aggregates them together in one place so you can see your travel plans in one place.

At one stage of my career, I was travelling internationally around 3 times a month. The company policy was to organise your own travel which for me generally involved an indirect flight and usually an overnight stay – TripIt was invaluable for keeping track of all that – in addition to my personal travel! Once you have setup a free account and downloaded the app, all you do is forward your travel confirmation emails to one single TripIt email address. Then it will take the information from these bookings and organise everything into a comprehensive itinerary.

How to find cheap flights for an Extreme Day Trip

Following on from our recent post on Where to visit for an Extreme Day Trip , this article shows you how to find cheap flights that will not break the bank.

The most important thing is to find a destination from your preferred airport that has more than one flight a day.  Of course this is not so much of an issue if you live near Heathrow, Stansted or Gatwick but you will have a lot more limited choice of destinations if you are looking at flying from somewhere like Cardiff or Teesside.  If you are outside of London or Manchester, it is likely that you will have a more limited selection of destinations to visit.

Where to visit for an Extreme Day Trip

Extreme Day Trips have become extremely popular in recent years. The premise is that you take an early flight out to a European city, spend the full day there, cramming in as much as possible, and then fly home in the evening thus avoiding the cost of an overnight stay.

Extreme Day Trips are a fantastic way to visit a new place, maybe just to eat the local food, see something special at a museum or watch a sporting event.

With a limited time frame, no-one wants to spend too much time travelling, or arrive at an airport which is an hour away from the city centre. So we have put together this table to help you find somewhere for your next EDT.
